do film ratings reflect the content of the films?

Hi all, Kat and i watched a dvd last night which we have to say was very good, but the opening scene was a lady and man fondling each other boob out hands down her knickers ect then in further scenes throat being cut peeps being shot in the head drugs being snorted pill popping ect kat thought this film must be a 18 but when she checked it was just a 15!!!even a 12A rating passes the buck to the parents, begs the question what does a film need to contain to be a 18 (i know the hardcore sex thing lol)should we be exposing our children to these scenes seeing as we have problems in this country with ,drugs ect,now i know that kids grow up quick these days and get to hear about these things in the playground, are there no family morals any more,we do vet movies before we allow the kids to watch them or we watch it with them as family time but if the content/language is not suitable then we switch it off and the kids are fine with this, are we being to old fashioned or should kids as far as possible be allowed to be kids?see not a rant just a question to ponder, love Kat and Neil xxxxx

This is a good thread.... I remember watching films like Poltergiest when I was 7 and it scared the holy shite out of me... I'm now 33, and I watched it again about 10 years ago and the horror was funny. Also, I saw the Exorcist when it came back to the cinema a few years ago, and people were laughing... When it was originally released it was banned.. The bbfc website is a good guide to what the peeps who clasify films expect. A 15 certificate film is classified as follows: Theme No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate to 15 year olds. Language There may be frequent use of strong language (eg 'fuck'). But the strongest terms (eg 'cunt') will be acceptable only where justified by the context. Continued aggressive use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable. Nudity Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. Sex Sexual activity may be portrayed but without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour. Violence Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. Scenes of sexual violence must be discreet and brief. Imitable techniques Dangerous techniques (eg combat, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on imitable detail. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised. Horror Strong threat and menace are permitted. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Drugs Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. Sorry, my research hat has come right off... If you want any future films recomendations, "Shaving Ryans Privates" and "King Dong" are top notch biggrin.....
thanks dr_dave but is the rating 15 the new 18???
We find that 15 rated horror films today leave us cold and wanting but the 18's do usually deliver the 'goods' :-) I got dead excited the other day as when the warnings came up on the DVD it gained a 'full house' - Strong Language / Violence / Scenes of a sexual nature / Contains very strong bloody gore and violence !!!!!!! As far as the kids are concerned they can pretty much watch what they want and they censor themselves as they know the content and dont want to see it If they dont watch it round our house they will almost certainly watch it round a mates house The same goes for video games, you trying telling a 12 year old lad hes not allowed to play Grand Theft Auto for another 6 years !
