Here y'are Mo - quote from the 'Vibrators FAQ' website:
"George Taylor's steam powered vibrators were perhaps the first patented mechanical vibrating devices made to stimulate female patients. The first electromechanical vibrator was designed in 1880 by a British physician, Joseph Mortimer Granville. Although his model more closely resembled what we think of as a vibrator, Granville did not support the use of vibrating devices for inducing female orgasm. He intended it to be used to massage male skeletal muscles. However, the technology proved adaptable, as the millions of women who have used massagers know."
Keep you eyes on Ebay too Mo - here's another quote from the site:
"Antique vibrators are often on sale on eBay, and may be available through antique dealers who trade in small appliances"

I presume you still call the doorbell a "doorbell" rather than a buzzer than babe! xxx
Actually, not so very long ago, a gneral hardware retailer not far from me sold a bog-standard vibrator for £12 - he also displayed it in his window amongst window fittings and general household goods etc!
Whilst I'm on a roll, thinking back to the mid-70s (when pubic hair was all the rage), when these were advertised in certain adult magazines, it was then referred to as a "Non-Doctor" vibrator. Was sexual release available on prescription prior to 1974 then?
In the same ads, there was a vibrator on sale called the "Buck-Ram Stimulus Kit". This has raised many a few giggles amongst record collectors like myself, as Buck Ram was one of the original lead singers of The Platters in the mid-50s!
"Oh yes...I'm the great, preeeeetender......doo-do-dooo-do"
